HOW TO: MEASURING YOUR SPACE
For a square or rectangular room, you will first need to measure the length and then the width of the room.
Then multiply the length and width. Length x Width = Area.
So, if your room measures 11 feet wide x 15 feet long, your total area will be 165 square feet. You will need this measurement when estimating the amount of flooring that you will use for your project.
Generally, you will want to add a 10% waste factor: Just multiply your area by 1.1 and then round upward. So, if your total area is 165 square feet, you will need to order enough tile mortar and grout for 182 square feet.
If your room is not perfectly square (such as an "L" shape), you will need to split up the room into two sections in order to calculate the total area.
Measure the height and length of each rectangle, calculate the total area of each rectangle, and then add the totals together.
Don't forget to add the 10% waste factor: Just multiply your area by 1.1 and then round upward.
If your room has a diagonal shape or corner, you will need to split up the room into two sections in order to calculate the total area.
First, measure the rectangle's length and width. Then calculate the total area of the rectangle.
Next, measure the triangle's base width and height (top-to-bottom length). Then divide the base by 2 and multiply this number by the height. (½ Base) x Height = Area.
Finally, add the areas of the rectangle and triangle together.
Don't forget to add the 10% waste factor: Just multiply your area by 1.1 and then round upward.
